Open Basic Education (OBE)


Programme providing a elementary education at three levels, for school drop-outs and neo-literates, out of school learners through Accredited Agencies. Under its “Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA)”, the Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has been endeavouring to provide Basic Education to all children, youth and adults in the country. The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) has launched the Open Basic Education (OBE) Programme, as an alternative educational programme, equivalent to the Elementary Education Programme of the formal education system. The OBE Programme explores and makes use of the potentialities of Distance Education Mode (DEM) for reaching the unreached. The Foundation Course of NIOS has been subsumed into the Open Basic Education 9OBE) Programme. There is a provision of separate OBE programme for children and adults.

The clientele for Open Basic Education (OBE) programme is:
»  Children below 14 years of age
»  Adults above 14 years of age

The OBE Programme is offered at three levels:
»  OBE level A : equivalent to class I-III
»  OBE level B : equivalent to class IV-V
»  OBE level C : equivalent to class VI-VIII

Secondary Course


This Course is equivalent to the Xth standard. You can choose subjects from the Scheme of Studeies given in Table-. However, you will be required to successfully complete a minimum of five subjects with atleast one language or atmost two languages, which is compulsory for certification.

Senior Secondary Course


This Course is designed for those who have passed the Xth standard or equivalent examination from a recognised Board and would like to continue their education towards a Senior Secondary Certification, equivalent to XII standard. You can choose subjects from the Scheme of Studies given in Table. However, you will be required to successfully complete a minimum of five subjects with atleast one language or atmost two languages, which is compulsory for Certification.

Vocational Education


Any one, who is interested in pursuing a Vocational Education programme can register as per the entry. Minimum age for admission is 14 years. There is no upper age limit.
